Is it power addiction or sheer intellectual arrogance, whatever compels Syrian President Bashar-al-Assad to resist forces of change, it is beginning to show him up as a hunted animal on the ideologically split global landscape. He is making history, as the only Arab country to ever face economic sanctions by the Arab league of states. This does not augur well for the future of one of the oldest cradle of Arab history. The Syrian leadership in power for 40 years must realise and bow to popular demand for change. Throwing the rich country into war and misery can only open wide gaps for vested interests to aggravate the brewing popular dissent for their benefit.  Cause, in the present context, has ceased to matter. The President must take cognizance of the apparent manifest. He urgently needs to muster international support with all the political maturity and finesse and compromise heavily his singular political ambitions. It is a bitter truth that his days in power are numbered and it's time to step out of the gilded palace.

Whether his friends in the Arab world and whether the western powers, under the UN wing, will be able to ensure the suave Syrian leader some semblance of his old glory remains to be seen. Like a cornered lion, he roars at his attackers, perhaps understanding that in the merciless world he has lost many friends who rode the tide of glory with him. One can only wonder after Ben, Hosni, Gaddafi, now Assad, who next…?

Perhaps as the sun sets on the self styled leaders, there is hope for the millions to warm their chilled hands in the glow of the rising sun.
