Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has said his government would accord more thrust to create sufficient infrastructure in tourism sector. “Creation of adequate infrastructure will help provide better facilities and opportunities in tourism sector and accordingly attract more tourists to Goa,” he said after inaugurating the second edition of three-day Goa International Travel Mart (GITM) 2011 at Bambolim.
Expressing happiness over the holding of GITM continuously for the second time in Goa, Kamat said once mining was considered as the backbone of the state's economy, but tourism is now slowly replacing mining. He outlined the government's efforts being made for promotion of tourism in Goa and said the state is safe and secure place for tourists in the country. Stating that Goa has created a brand for itself across the world, Kamat said that Goa receives 2.6 million tourists every year of which 2.2 million are domestic tourists. He said though there are different facets of tourism, there is a greater need to focus on responsible tourism so that the tourists arriving in Goa will go back with sweet memories of the state.
He further said that the Beach Safety Management System, introduced by the government, has helped to drastically bring down the drowning cases on the beaches of Goa.
Goa Tourism Minister Halarnkar said that GITM with the theme 'Unearth the Hidden Treasures of Goa' is one of the exclusive business-to-business networking events organised in the country.
